Forever home for Simba, choc lab girl
Price: -Forever home for Simba, choc lab girl
Looking for a loving forever home for the gorgeous chocolate lab girl Simba. She's about 6-7 years old from vet's estimates.
She's been in a few homes through her life and deserves to find a family that'll be the last one. It's taken months of back and forth to make this call but we've decided that we cannot provide her with the attention and care she deserves.
History: She was rescued in 2020 from a house where she was supposedly kept mostly outside in a cage too small for her size. For a few months friends fostered her, found out quickly she had epilepsy, we offered to take her on a 'holiday' to put her on a carb ***** diet to fight the disease, having had experience with the diet. Symptoms improved massively but she'll have to be medicated forever, as friends family couldn't afford the costs and their kids struggled with her seizures she stayed with us - we couldn't put her in a shelter and were supposed to be *****ing a big house with garden.
Unfortunately 3 years later our situation doesn't look better, we're still in a small house without garden and we never managed to get her and our other dog to live peacefully together. Now as children entered the family as well she's just not getting all the attention and space she needs and deserves.
Her nature: Simba is a proper family dog. She loves pets and cuddles and is amazing with children. We've never been afraid to leave her with our toddler who's been not gentle at all with her at times. She may be better off as a single dog or to be paired with an easy going dog, as jealousy is big and as soon as you'll give any attention to the other, she'll be right there physically pushing them away to get love 😆 It may be no issue with some dogs, however our other dog does not like that one bit. Not sure how she is with cats.
She's also a massive goofball, known to walk into things due to focusing too much on food or the ball in your hand. Has knocked our toddler over many times with her butt and spilled many teas with her tail. It's definitely part of her charm though. She runs up to everyone and sits at their feet to get pets, everyone that's met her loved her instantly.
She's forever hungry and as a typical lab will eat anything that's remotely edible, including poo. We've had to use a muzzle for walks quite often as our area is very bad for littering and she had a very bad poisoning once. On the other hand she's stolen many things in her lifetime that should've killed her (pack of mince pies, full haribo cake, contents of a bin) and came away with a bad stomach for a day or two.
After food her other love is chasing ball 🙂 So much that on walks she has to be reminded to go for a poo.
She still wees out of excitement and isn't the best at letting you know when she needs to go out, she also drinks a lot, so it's best to let her out for a wee fairly often.
She's had a bit of training but could benefit greatly from more attention in that area. Pulls on lead, ok for recall unless she's found food, can get protective over food.
Medical: Her epilepsy meds cost £34 a month at the moment plus around £200 twice a year for check ups.
Her seizures were happening every 2 weeks before we got her, after change of diet dropped to less than once a month and also in severity, even had a half a year break. We've just increased the dose in September so yet to see if they'll be happening, so far so good.
In 2021 for several months she was limping on her back right leg, vets were suggesting dysplasia. However with care not to strain her and lots of turmeric powder it seemed to have gone away so we believe she had pulled something. She's been absolutely fine for over a year now.
We cancelled her health insurance as epilepsy and back leg problems were no longer covered. Bear that in mind if getting insurance for her.
Not spayed or microchipped, pregnancy not recommended though. Due to her epilepsy we've avoided any chemical dewormers, vaccinations, flea treatments etc. as they can contribute to seizures. We deworm her naturally and she's never had any issues, generally thriving on the raw meat diet, in great shape with shiny coat. In comparison she was overweight and unfit on commercial dog food, so we highly recommend sticking to the diet for various reasons.
We want to make sure she goes to a loving person/family that has the time to give her the attention she needs.
